Well, I had a revelation/inspiration on the way back from visiting with my dad who was in the hospital last week (but is recovering nicely). I decided I would challenge myself and do a half marathon. No, I haven't COMPLETELY lost my mind (yet) and no, I'm not what you would call a runner, although I do run periodically. I've just never run 13 miles in one stretch. So, I enlisted my friend Andrea and together we will run the Surfside Beach Half Marathon on Valentine's Day 2009. Surfside Beach is south of Galveston and the run is entirely on the packed sand and starts at sunrise (sigh). Since I love, love, love the beach I figured this would be a good place to start. If we survive, we plan to run the Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon/Half Marathon in April. I started my training last night with an easy (yeah, right) 3 miles around the track. The miracle is that I can still walk today. I will run a total of 9.5 miles this week and 13.5 next week, progressing each week until a few weeks before the end of the 12 week program when I start tapering my time down in preparation for the big event. The training program also includes some cross training and 2 days of rest, thank heavens. So wish us well and I'll keep you posted!
I ran/walked 2.25 miles and rode 10.8 miles on a stationary bike today. I may have to sign up for the walked part of the marathon- I simply hated the 6 minutes or so I ran! But I walked at a 4.3 mph pace and was feeling great! UGH! I need one of those things like on Speed, where something bad will happen if I stop running. I just don't know where I will manage to find the will to run when I can walk just as fast as some people! =(
